René Jules Lalique

Born: 1860, France, Ay   Died: 1945

Glass designer. Served an apprenticeship to the jeweller Louis Aucoq, 1876, before moving to London where he studied at the Sydenham Art College, 1878-80. He then returned to Paris where in 1885 he took over the jewellery workshop of Jules Destape. From 1893 he worked in glass and by 1913 had established a glassworks factory at Combs-La-Ville. His designs were a major influence on the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. His patrons included Calouste Gulbenkian (1869-1955) and Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) and he received important commissions for fittings on the Orient Express and the S.S.Normandie and for perfume bottles for Francois Coty
