John William North

Born: 1842   Died: 1924

ARA RWS
North was born in 1842. He was a British landscape painter and illustrator. He was an Idyllist, especially in his early years. From a young age he was seen as a talented artist. At the age of 16, he worked on black and white illustrations for publications, gaining a reputation for the quality of his landscapes. In 1866 North’s parents returned from Canada, where they emigrated, and he became the main provider for the whole family. In the period 1860-67 he had success artistically and financially. North was developing his skill as a watercolourist, and decided to pursue his painting full time, giving up the illustration work. He was granted four showings of his paintings at the Royal Academy in 1869. In subsequent years, up to 1887, he worked on paintings between Somerset, a studio in London, and a house in Algeria. He was eventually accepted as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and an associate of the Royal Academy (ARA). North died in 1924, at Somerset at age 82.
