Display artist/maker:

William Quiller Orchardson , Sir

Born: 1832, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh   Died: 1910, UK, England, London

Painter, RA. Studied at the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh, under Robert Scott Lauder (1803-1869). It was here that Orchardson joined a circle of artists including William McTaggart (1835-1910), Thomas Graham (1840-1906) and John Pettie (1839-1893). From 1848 Orchardson was already exhibiting his work at the Royal Scottish Academy, and upon his move to London in 1862 (alongside Pettie and Graham) he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy every year. He established a solid reputation as a portraitist and painter of literary and historical scenes, becoming known for his reserved palette and 'sketchy' style. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1868 and a full member in 1877. By the late 1870s, Orchardson's style had moved from historical scenes to vignettes of Victorian high society. An honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy and an honorary Doctor of Law at Oxford University, he was knighted in 1907.
