Display artist/maker:

Francisco de Goya

Born: 1746, Spain, Aragon, Fuendetodos   Died: 1828, Bordeaux

Painter and printmaker. Son of a gilder. Served an apprenticeship in Saragossa before studying under Francisco Bayeu (1734-1795) in Madrid. He visited Rome, 1770-71, before settling in Madrid in 1775 where he worked on cartoons for the royal tapestry factory until about 1792. From 1789 he worked in the court of Charles IV (1748-1819), becoming First Court Painter in 1799, a post he continued to hold during the French occupation, 1808-14. He was also a member of the Academy of San Fernando serving as Assistant Director from 1785 and as Director from 1795. After suffering an illness in 1792 he became stone deaf. This affected his artistic outlook with his work becoming socially critical and frequently macarbe. He produced a variety of work including portraits, frescoes, lithographs and etchings, the latter including the series 'Los Caprichos', 1799, and 'Los Desastres de la Guerre', 1810-14
