Joseph Noel Paton

Born: 1821, UK, Scotland, Dunfermline, Wooer's Alley   Died: 1901, UK, Scotland, Edinburgh

RSA. Painter, illustrator, sculptor and poet. Son of damask designer Joseph Neil Paton (1797-1874), brother of sculptor Amelia Robertson Hill (1821-1904) and painter Waller Hugh Paton (1828-1895). Studied at Dunfermline Art Academy, 1830-33, and briefly at the Royal Academy Schools in 1843. Paton rarely left Scotland for the remainder of his life. He met considerable success as an illustrator, notably for Coleridge's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and Shelley's 'Prometheus Unbound'. While he had declined an invitation to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Paton was still influenced by their work in the 1850s and his expertise in folklore further inspired a number of historical and mythical paintings. His success earned him a knighthood and the title of royal limner to Queen Victoria in 1867, and in 1881 he was awarded an honorary degree of LLD by Edinburgh University.
