Frederick Richard Pickersgill

Born: 1820, UK, England, London   Died: 1900, UK, England, Isle of Wight

Painter and illustrator, RA. Son of a naval officer. He received his first instruction in drawing from his uncle, William Frederick Witherington RA (1785-1865), and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1840. Between 1839 and 1875 he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, becoming known for scenes drawn from literature, religion and history as well as a collection of landscapes influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Pickersgill became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1847, and by 1857 was a full Academician.
