Edwin Austin Abbey

Born: 1852, USA, Philadelphia   Died: 1911, London

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Studied under Isaac L. Williams (1817-1895) in Philadelphia. From 1874 he was employed as an illustrator for 'Harper's Weekly' for whom he continued to work despite settling in England in 1878 where he became a friend of John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Alfred Parsons (1847-1920). His work for Harper's included a series of illustrations on the comedies and tragedies of Shakespeare which he produced between 1887 and 1909. From 1889 he turned more to painting and attracted numerous commissions including an official record of Edward VII's Coronation and murals for the Boston Public Library, 1890-1901, and for the capitol building at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the latter being finished by Sargent. In 1891 he was elected President of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists
