Paulo Priolo

   Active: 1857 - 1890

Born in 1820, he was known as a very respectable artist of Victorian illustrated books. He illustrated or co-illustrated half a dozen books and published other works in periodicals such as The Sunday At Home and The Churchman’s Family Magazine. He produced wood engravings, etchings, and lithographs. A Sicily-born artist, he emigrated to Britain in the 1850s. He lived mostly in London, in respectable neighbourhoods. He returned to Italy on multiple occasions. Two of his paintings are at The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, but his other paintings must be in private hands (it is unknown). He exhibited at The Royal Academy, though he was never an ARA himself. He reached his widest audience, however, as an illustrator. He was predominantly a Neo-Classical artist. He died in 1890/ 1892.
