Charles H. Ross

Born: 1835, UK, England, London   Died: 1897   Active: 1867 - 1883

Cartoonist, writer, playwright and theatre manager. Son of Charles Ross, parliamentary reporter for The Times, and nephew of Sir William Ross RA (1794-1860), painter and royal portraitist. Beginning his career as a parliamentary reporter like his father, Ross wrote and drew for the penny press in his spare time. Producing work for popular penny dreadfuls such as Charley Wag, he often used the pseudonyms George Savage and Edward Ellis. As his career progressed, Ross contributed columns and comic strips to the comic journal 'Judy,' in which his most popular character was Ally Sloper. He is also noted for a number of novels and plays and an operetta, 'The Prisoners at the Bar' (1878)
