Frank Stone

Born: 1800, UK, England, Manchester   Died: 1859, UK, England, London

Painter. Son of a cotton spinner and father of painter and illustrator Marcus Stone (1840-1921). Having worked in his father’s business until the age of 24, Stone left the family business and taught himself to paint in oil and watercolour. He moved to London in 1831 and was elected associate exhibitor of the Old Watercolour Society. He became a full member in 1842 but resigned in 1846 in order to try becoming a member of the Royal Academy where he had exhibited oil paintings for the first time in 1833. In 1851, he was elected associate member of the Royal Academy and showed a total of 42 paintings there. He was friends with Charles Dickens (1812-1870) who asked him to create e. g. the frontispiece for the cheap edition of ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ (1848). Stone also portrait Dickens’s daughters Mary and Katherine. Among his most popular pictures were ‘The Last Appeal’, ‘Impending Mate’ and ‘Mated’.
