William Luson Thomas

Born: 1830, UK, England, London   Died: 1900

Engraver, painter and journalist. Son of a shipbroker, brother of George Housman Thomas (1824-1868). Educated in Fulham, Middlesex. Upon leaving school, Thomas joined his brother in Paris where he learned to engrave. He followed George to America and then to Rome, where he studied art at the Académie de France. Later, in England, he became assistant to W. J. Linton (1812-1897). While sharing an office with the engraver Horace Harral (1817-1905), he illustrated many books and periodicals such as the Illustrated London News and Hans Christian Andersen's Tales for Children. He painted watercolours for leisure throughout his career and became an associate of the Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1864; in 1884, the Institute achieved royal status and Thomas became an RI. Thomas is also known for founding the illustrated weekly newspaper "The Graphic", famed for its depictions of Victorian poverty and social realism
