Edward J. Whymper

Born: 1840, UK, England, London   Died: 1911, France, Chamonix

Engraver and mountaineer. Son of artist Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903). Whypmer was apprenticed as a draughtsman engraver in his father’s workshop. He visited the Alps in 1960 to create illustrations for the publisher William Longman (1813-1877). In 1865, he opened his own business in London and took over his father’s business in the 1890s. He produced images for travel books such as Samuel Manning’s ‘Swiss Pictures Drawn with Pen and Pencil’, 1866, and for journals such as Sunday Magazine, Leisure Hour and the Illustrated London News. In addition, he drew portraits, which were published in ‘British Heroes and Worthies’, 1871. Together with is father, he produced images for Joseph Wolf’s ‘Wild Animals’, 1973-74. Being an ardent mountaineer, he wrote, for example ‘Scrambles among the Alps in the Years 1860-69’, 1871, for which he provided the woodcuts as well. He served as president of the Alpine Club, 1872-72, received the order of St Maurice and Lazarus from the king of Italy, 1872, and the patron’s medal of the Royal Geographical Society, 1892. He was the first to succeed in climbing the Matterhorn.
