Emrys Williams

Born: 1958, UK, England, Liverpool

Painter. Born in Liverpool and moved to Colwyn Bay with his family when he was 11. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, from 1976 - 80, before embarking on a career in teaching. He has worked as a part-time lecturer at Coleg Menai, Bangor since 1990. His work has been exhibited widely in Britain, France and Germany and has been part of several important group exhibitions including the 12th Liverpool John Moores Painting Exhibition, 1982, where he was a prize winner. Williams collaborates in dance, opera and design as well as working on his painting, notably acting as Artist in Residence for the Welsh National Opera and working with Director Paul Islwyn Thomas on the film ‘Sunny Spells A Game for Optimists’. He uses his art to create a personal world based on memory and imagination. Silent, mysterious characters huddled under umbrellas; lighthouses, trains, distant boats and ships; these all form the basic vocabulary of his paintings, working as part of a narrative set within familiar costal scenes. His work is in many public collections such as the Arts Council of England, the Government Art Collection, the National Museum of Wales and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
