Nicholas Verrall

Born: 1945, UK, England, Northampton

Painter. Studied Fine Art and Printmaking at the Northampton Center for the Arts, where he obtained his degree in 1965. He worked in picture conservation and restoration before becoming a full-time artist in 1970. His first solo show was at the Upper Grosvenor Gallery in 1971, which was followed by regular exhibitions at Seen Gallery Belgravia, London. His work was first hung at the Royal Academy (RA) in 1976 and subsequently eleven times after that. He has had regular solo exhibitions at the Catto Gallery, London since the 90s, and his work has been included in major art fairs including the International Arts Fair, Olympia and the 20th Century British Art Fair, London. His work has also been shown in France, Hong Kong, Japan and the USA as well as being housed in numerous private collections. Verrall has received numerous awards for his work, notably the City of London Annual Exhibition Prize, the Artist Magazine Prize, the Abbot and Holder Prize, and the de Laszlo Medal from members of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 2015; a society to which he was elected a member in 2010. He has also been a member of the Royal Society of Oil Painters since 2011. His characteristic oil technique, in which he captures special lighting effects and moods at the right moment, makes him one of the most important and successful Contemporary painters in the world. His book ‘Colour and Light in Oils’ was published in 2008.
