William Thomas Rawlinson

Printmaker. Studied at Liverpool City School of Art where he first learned wood engraving. He was awarded a Senior City Art Scholarship in 1932, which funded a six-month sketching and painting tour across France, Italy, Czechoslovakia and Germany. He began teaching at Liverpool City School in 1934 where he stayed for one year before leaving to become Head of Art at the Liverpool Institute. It was also at this time that he started regularly exhibiting his work. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 until the end of the war, and while there was appointed an official war artist, covering action in Tunis and Algiers as well as the Italian campaign. He returned to teaching in Liverpool after the War. He served as County Organiser for Art and Craft in Cheshire in 1948, becoming HM Inspector of Schools in 1951, and returning to school teaching in Kidderminster in 1953. As for his art, he consistently exhibited for the next forty years, principally at the Royal Academy, the Paris Salon and the Society of Wood Engravers. He won medals at the Paris Salon twice; the Silver in 1958 and the Gold in 1960, and was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1972. He was also a founding member of the Stratford Art Society and became its President in 1974. Rawlinson’s work focuses primarily on the landscape and architecture he encounters on his travels around Britain as well as studies of the overseas locations he travelled to when he was younger. He has prints housed and exhibited in many public collections, including the Asmolean Museum, Oxford, Brighton Art Gallery, the Dresden Museum, Germany and the Appleton Gallery, New York, USA.
