Display artist/maker:

Edward Povey

Born: 1951, UK, England, London

Painter. Son of a seaman. Povey studied drawing at Eastbourne College for Art and Design, 1972-73, and painting at the University of Wales, 1974-78, where he was taught by Welsh artist Selwyn Jones (1928-98). He painted 25 murals in different destinations around the UK during the 1970s, for example, Caernarfon in 1979, which made him known to a wider audience. In 1980s, he trained with e. g. painter Malcolm T. Liepke (born 1953) in New York and Jan de Maere in Brussels. The president of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, Sir Kyffin Williams, invited him to become a member in the late 1990s. The Lord Chamberlain invited Povey to meet Her Majesty the Queen in 2001, and, in 2006, he was proposed for a knighthood by, among others, BBC Wales. Since 2003, he has worked and/or lectured with artist Tolar Schultz (1966) in Wales, England, the Caribbean and the US. His work has been influenced by Picasso and Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) and is predominantly figurative.
