Display artist/maker:

Anthony Raine Barker

Born: 1880, UK, England, Middlesex, Harrow   Died: 1963

Painter, printmaker, illustrator and architect. After attending school at Framlingham College he trained as an architect and was awarded the Soane Medallion for Design in 1909 for his architectural drawings. A travel scholarship attached to this prize enabled him to travel to Italy and Holland, c.1910. He soon developed a parallel career as an artist concentrating on printmaking (mainly etching and lithography) but also as a watercolourist and commercial artist. Under the latter role he designed advertising posters for London Transport, 1913-14, and later for Shell Oil, 1925. He was an active member of the Senefelder Club and knew Frank Brangwyn who possibly taught him the art of lithography. In 1914 he published his 'First Belgian Portfolio' - 6 lithographs in an edition of 100 sets intended to raise money for Belgians made homeless by the outbreak of war. He also illustrated a number of children's books with woodcuts including 'The Fairyland Express',1925, and 'Hidden Gold', 1926. His subject matter varied and included landscapes, continental scenes, the circus and architecture. He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy during the 1920s
