James Bateman

Born: 1893, UK, Cumbria, Kendal   Died: 1959, London

Painter and printmaker. Son of a farmer. Studied sculpture at Leeds College of Art, 1910-14, before winning a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art. After college he served in the First World War during which he suffered severe injuries which later forced him to turn to painting. He returned to study this time at the Slade School, 1919-21, and was a Rome Scholarship finalist in 1920. He taught at Cheltenham School of Art 1922-28, and then at Hammersmith School of Art. He recorded contemporary rural life working in a similar, though more detailed, style to Stanley Spencer (1891-1959). From 1924 he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and was appointed a Royal Academician in 1942. During the Second World War he designed camouflage in Warwickshire. Some of his work is in the collection of the Tate Gallery
