William Mynorydd Davies

Born: 1826, UK, Wales, Merthyr Tydfil   Died: 1901

Born 26 Jan. 1826, the son of Moses Davies (1799-1866). At 16, Davies was employed by William Behnes in London. Also a dedicated and talented musician, he published a history of Welsh musicians in London in 1895. He later became leader of the Welsh Choral Society after Dan Jones. As a sculptor he exhibited about 40 times at the Royal Academy. He made busts and statues of many Welsh preachers, including that of Thomas Charles of Bala which now stands in front of the Calvinistic Methodist chapel at Bala. Although his given name was simply William Davies, he often included the name Mynorydd when exhibiting in Wales. In the interests of continuity, his works in this collection have all been attributed to William Mynorydd Davies. He died 22 September 1901, and was buried in the West Hampstead cemetery.
