Antonio Canova

Born: 1757, Italy, Possagno   Died: 1822, Italy, Venice

Neoclassicist sculptor. Canova worked under the sculptor Giuseppe Bernardi from a very young age, and set up his own studio in Venice in 1775, aged only 18. His first important work was sculpted in 1779; a sculpture of Daedalus and Icarus, deemed so realistic that many believed he must have taken a plaster cast from living people. During his career he also worked on the tombs of Pope Clement XIV and Pope Clement XIII; a bust of and an equestrian statue of Napoleon Bonaparte; and perhaps most famously, his portrayal of Napoleon's sister Pauline Borghese as 'Venus Victrix'.
