Francis Dodd

Born: 1874, UK, Wales, Holyhead   Died: 1949, London

Painter and printmaker. Specialised in portraiture, landscapes, and etchings of architectual subjects. The son of a Wesleyan minister, he trained at the Glasgow School of Art winning the Haldene Scholarship in 1893. There he met Muirhead Bone (1876–1953) who not only influenced his work but also married his sister. After travelling through France, Italy and, later, Spain, he came to live in Manchester,1895-1905, becoming friends with Charles Holden (1875-1960), architect of several London undergound stations. Dodd moved to London in 1911. During the First World War he was appointed an official war artist, taking over the commission from Muirhead Bone. Serving on the Western Front, he produced more than 30 portraits of senior military figures. After the War he continued to build up his reputation being appointed a trustee of the Tate Gallery in 1929 and elected to the Royal Academy in 1935.
