James Fitton

Born: 1899, UK, England, Oldham   Died: 1982, Dulwich, London

Painter, printmaker, illustrator and political cartoonist. Son of a union leader. Studied at Manchester Art School where he was a fellow student and friend of L.S.Lowry (1887-1976). Moved to London in 1921. From 1925 he attended Archibald Standish Hartrick's evening classes in lithography at the Central School of Art, a class Fitton took over in 1933. He was a founder member of the Artists' International Association. He worked as an Art Director for Vernon's Advertising Agency and later as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist, particularly for the 'Left Review'. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy
