Ethel Leontine Gabain

Born: 1883, France, Le Harve   Died: 1950, London

Printmaker and illustrator. Wife of the printmaker John Copley (1875-1950). After an English school education she studied at the Central School of Art and Crafts and at the Slade School of Fine Art. She also studied briefly in Paris. From 1925 she and Copley lived for some time in Italy. She was a member of The Society of Women Artists and, as a professional lithographer, a founder member of the Senefelder Club. Her favourite subjects included the ballet and the female figure. She illustrated 'Jane Eyre', Pichon, 1923, and worked as an Official War Artist during the Second World War
