Edgar Holloway

Born: 1914, UK, England, Doncaster   Died: 2008

Painter and printmaker. Son of a miner-turned-printseller. He attended evening classes and studied part-time at Doncaster Art School, 1929-33, and at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1934. During this time he produced detailed portrait etchings and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Twenty-One Gallery. During the late 1930s and early 1940s he taught at schools in Shropshire, Hertfordshire and London. After a conversion to Catholicism he lived near Eric Gill's monastery at Capel-y-ffin, 1948-50, before settling in Ditchling, Sussex. Economic circumstances forced him to abandon etching for 25 years working instead as an illustrator and signwriter. He resumed etching in 1968 and continued to produce landscapes and portraits. His series of self portraits spanned his entire adult life.
