Graham Vivian Sutherland

Born: 1903, UK, England, London, Streatham   Died: 1980, Hampstead

Painter, printmaker and designer. Son of a lawyer. Studied engraving and etching at Goldsmiths' College, 1921-26, where, together with fellow student Paul Drury (1903-1987), he created romantic etchings of pastoral landscapes. Between 1926 and 1940 he taught at Chelsea School of Art, Kingston School of Art, the Ruskin School, Oxford, and at Goldsmiths'. From 1935 onwards he turned towards painting producing semi-abstract landscapes inspired by visits to Pembrokeshire. He was appointed an Official War Artist during the Second World War recording industry and bomb damage on the Home Front, 1940-45. During the 1950s he was a frequent visitor to France and increasingly worked as a portraitist with sitters including Somerset Maugham and Sir Winston Churchill. He also designed a large tapestry for Coventry Cathedral
