Rosa S. Hope

Painter and printmaker. Her mother was a teacher at Camberwell School of Art and her father an agent. In 1918 she won a scholarship to study at the Slade School of Art where she was taught by Henry Tonks, Wilson Steer and John Wheatley. During the 1920s she specialised in printmaking and won the Prix de Rome in 1926 for her etching on the competition theme of The Adoration of the Shepherds. She consequently travelled in Europe and exhibited at the New English Art Club and the Redfern Gallery. In 1935 she visited South Africa and was soon offered a teaching post at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town where she founded the School's engraving department. By 1938 she had moved to a lecturing post at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzsburg where she remained until 1957. She made numerous sketching trips into the Drakensberg and Transkei mountain ranges painting scenes of village life and landscapes, the latter often in an impressionist style. She was also a prolific portraitist and designed a tiled mural for Irene Post Office, Gauteng. She exhibited with the South African Society of Artists until 1942. A large collection of her work is held by the University of Natal
