Clarke Stanley Hutton

Born: 1898, Stoke Newington, London   Died: 1984, Westminster, London

Born in Stoke Newington, London, on 14 November 1898, son Ethel (née Clark) and Harold Clarke Hutton, a solicitor. He became assistant stage designer at the Empire Theatre in 1916. A trip to Italy in the 1920s inspired him to become an artist. Hutton joined A. S. Hartrick's lithography class at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London in 1927 and took over teaching the class when Hartrick retired, until 1968. He experimented with direct, hand drawn lithography, in order to develop a method of producing affordable full-colour children's books and worked with Noel Carrington at Penguin Books to develop the Picture Puffins book series. He also worked on Oxford University Press's Picture History series. He illustrated approximately 50 books for publishers in the UK and USA. Hutton also exhibited paintings of figures and landscapes. His later paintings were influenced by Surrealism influence. He died in Westminster in 1984.
