William Martin Larkins

Born: 1901, UK, England, London, East End, Bow   Died: 1974

Painter, etcher, film-maker and commercial artist. Son of an Irish steeplejack. Studied at Goldsmith's College, c.1919 - c.1924, where he was a friend of Graham Sutherland (1903-1980). Though taught at Goldsmith's by the etchers Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963) and Alfred Bentley (1879-1923) he was more influenced by the illustrator Edmund J. Sullivan (1869-1933). His etchings included townscapes of the East End and landscapes of Betws-y-Coed in North Wales. After the fall of the market for etchings he became a filmmaker and was later appointed Art Director for the advertising firm J. Walter Thompson. He designed the Black Magic chocolate box and the packet for Lux soap
