Clare Veronica Hope Leighton

Born: 1899 , UK, England, London   Died: 1989, Connecticut, USA

Printmaker, illustrator, designer and writer. Daughter of writers. Studied at Brighton College of Art and, during the early 1920s, at both the Slade School of Art and under Noel Rooke (1881-1953) at the Central School of Art and Design. After studying she taught in schools and travelled through Europe. She was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1934 and exhibited with the Artists' International Association in 1935. She emigrated with her parents to America in 1939 where she taught at Duke University until 1947 before settling at Woodbury, Connecticut. She is best known for her wood engravings often used to illustrate her own publications such as 'Four Hedges: A Gardener's Chronicle' (1935). She also worked in stained glass and wrote 'Wood Engraving and Woodcuts', Studio, (1932) and 'The Wood Engravings of the 1930s', Studio, (1934)
