Gerald Spencer-Pryse

Born: 1882, UK, England, Kent, Ashton   Died: 1952, Morocco

Printmaker, illustrator, graphic artist and writer. Educated at Eton, studied art in London and Paris and exhibited at the 1907 Venice International. He lived sporadically at Plas Goggerdan near Aberystwyth but travelled widely including visits to Africa. He designed propaganda posters for the First World War in which he also served firstly as a dispatch rider in Belgium, 1914, and then in the Indian Army. He was twice wounded and was awarded a Croix de Guerre for his bravery. After the war he produced posters for District Railway, the Empire Marketing Board and, as a life-long socialist, the Labour Party. He also illustrated mumerous books including Henry Fielding's 'The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling', Bodley Head, 1930. An experienced lithographer, he was co-founder of the Senefelder Club's magazine 'Neolith'. He married late in life and his daugter, Tessa Spencer-Pryse, is a painter
