Martin Erich Philipp

Printmaker and painter. Studied at Dresden’s Kunstgewerbe Schule, 1904-07, and the Kunstakademie, 1908-13, where he initially intended to train as a sculptor before turning to printmaking. His first print after leaving the Academy depicted three snake eagles and was awarded a gold medal in the Leipzig Book Design and Graphics Exhibition (Bugra) of 1914. He went on to produce a number of highly coloured woodcuts of flowers, the occasional landscape, and, his speciality, compositions of birds - particularly parrots and other exotic species which he studied at Dresden Zoo. He also produced etchings of family members, drawings of nudes and a few oil paintings including a late self portrait. He was married to Else Staps who was also a colour woodcut artist
