Nathaniel Sparks

Born: 1880, UK, England, Bristol   Died: 1957, Somerton

Printmaker and painter. Son of a violin restorer and a cousin of the writer Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). As a teenager he studied at Bristol College of Art and Science before studying under Sir Frank Short (1857-1945) at the Royal College of Art, c.1900-03. Whilst still a student he was commissioned by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) to print his 'Venice Set'. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1906 and by 1909 he had been made a fellow of the Royal Engravers. During the First World War he was employed engraving fine calibration for machinery at munitions factories. He produced detailed line engravings but enjoyed little commercial success after the war.
