Albert Edward Sterner

Born: 1863, UK, England, London   Died: 1946

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Sterner took drawing classes at Birmingham Art Institute in 1875. He lived with relatives in Germany from ca. 1879 to 1880 before joining his family in Chicago in the early 1880s. In Chicago, he worked as a stage painter at the Grand Opera House and for a lithography firm. He established his own studio in New York in 1885 and worked for magazines such as Scribner’s Century, Harper’s and Collier’s. In 1888, he studied under Gustave Boulanger (1824-88) and Jules Lefebvre (1836-1911) at the Académie Julian, Paris; he further trained with Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and exhibited at the Paris Salon for the first time in 1891 where he received an honourable mention. In 1918 he returned to the United States and taught at the Art Students League in New York. Awards included the Carnegie Prize at the National Academy in 1941. Among others, he created portraits of well-known patrons such as the Wideners, Whitneys and Vanderbilts.
