William Strang

Born: 1859, UK, Scotland, Dumbarton   Died: 1921, Bournemouth

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Began as a clerk to a Clydesdale shipbuilder before studying etching under Alphonse Legros (1837-1911) at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1876-80. He was greatly influenced by Legros and by Strang's friend Charles Ricketts (1866-1931). He won a Silver Medal for Etching at the 1889 Paris International Exhibition. He produced etchings and paintings of allegorical scenes and portraits, the latter including sitters such as Rudyard Kipling and Thomas Hardy. He also produced wood engravings for publications and some of his 750 etchings were used as illustrations in 'Death and the Ploughman's Wife' (1894), 'Pilgrim's Progress' (1895) and 'Don Quixote' (1903). His sons Ian Strang (1886-1952) and David Strang (b 1887) were also printmakers
