Georges Braque

Born: 1882, France, Le Harve, Argenteuil-sur-Sein   Died: 1963, Paris

Painter and designer. Son of a painter-decorator. First studied in Le Harve, alongside Raol Dufy (1877-1953), and later at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was first involved in the Fauvist Movement until he met Picasso in 1907 with whom he worked closely during the period 1910-12 developing Cubism. He then served in the First World War until wounded in 1915. When demobilized in 1916 he returned to his analytical cubist paintings of still lifes and interiors which formed the basis of his successful 1922 exhibition at the Salon d'Automne. His later work became freer and explored recurring themes such as landscapes, studios and, particularly, birds in flight. He won the painting prize at the 1948 Venice Biennale and on his death was honoured with a state funeral
