Kees Van Dongen

Born: 1877, Netherlands, Delfshaven   Died: 1968, Monaco

Painter and printmaker. Son of a brewer. Studied at Rotterdam Academy, 1894-95. Settled in Paris in 1899 where he became a friend of Picasso. He became a member of the Fauves in 1906 and exhibited with Die Brücke in Dresden, 1908, and at the second Golden Fleece show in Moscow, 1910. He travelled to Spain, Morocco and Egypt between 1910 and 1913. His early work was impressionist but he is better known for his Fauvist depictions, often erotic, of the female figure
