Raoul Dufy

Born: 1877, France, Le Harve   Died: 1953, France, Forcalquier

Painter, graphic artist and designer. Studied at Le Harve, alongside Georges Braque, and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the latter 1900-04. He produced Impressionist and Fauvist work before developing his unique style of rapidly drawn figurative forms on light backgrounds. His favourite subjects included regattas, horse races and musicians. He produced designs for the fashion designer Paul Poiret (1879-1944) and illustrated numerous books, notably Guillaume Apollinaire's 'Bestiare'. He also painted murals including 'The Spirit of Electricity' for the 1937 Paris World Fair and, together with his friend Othon Friesz (1879-1949), a view of the River Seine for a bar in a Paris theatre. He won the main painting prize at the 1952 Venice Biennale
