Sculptor, gardener and poet. Trained briefly at Glasgow School of Art. From 1942 he served in the Second World War after which he worked as a shepherd in the Orkneys. During the 1950s he turned to writing plays some of which were broadacast by the BBC. In 1961 he founded the Wild Hawthorn Press with Jessie McGuffie and in 1963 he published 'Rapel', a book of concrete poetry - a literary form which occupied him through much of the 1960s.
