Born: 1895, UK, England, Kent, Brockley   Died: 1974, Harrow

Painter, illustrator and calligrapher. Studied at Camberwell, 1909-15, and Westminster, 1919-22, Schools of Art - periods of study which were interrupted by army service in France during the First World War. He converted to Catholicism in 1921 and a year later he joined Eric Gill's Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic at Ditchling where he was taught engraving by Father Desmond Chute. In 1924 he again worked with Gill at his monastery in Capel-y-Ffin and later travelled with him to France, 1928, and to Jerusalem, 1931. He was a member of the Seven and Five Society from 1928 and won the Hawthornden Prize for Literature in 1937 for his 'In Parenthesis'. He painted imaginative watercolours, often relating to Arthurian legend, but he is also well known for his calligraphy in the Welsh language
