Jean Lurçat

Born: 1892, France, Vosges, Bruyères   Died: 1966, Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Painter, poet and designer. Studied in Nancy before moving to Paris in 1912. He travelled in the Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa in the 1920s. He later founded the Ecole d’Aubusson with Marcel Gromaire (1892-1971). He produced cubist and surrealist paintings, stage designs and book illustrations but is best known for his tapestry designs. As designer for the Aubusson tapestry factory from 1939, he made over a thousand such designs including the large scale 'Apocalypse' for the parish church in Assy in 1948
