Helen Paterson

Born: 1848, UK, England, Burton on Trent   Died: 1926, UK, England, Haslemere

Helen Allingham (née Paterson). Illustrator and painter. Daughter of a physician and wife of Irish poet William Allingham (1824-1889). Studied at the Birmingham School of Design 1862-66, the Female School of Art in London 1866, and at the Royal Academy Schools 1868-72, where she was influenced by the illustrator Fred Walker (1840-1875). Paterson came from an artistic background: her grandmother, Sarah Smith Herford (1818-?), was an oil painter, and her aunt Laura Herford (1831-1870) was the first woman to be admitted to the Royal Academy Schools. Paterson herself was the only woman on the staff of weekly periodical 'The Graphic,' and also the only woman to illustrate Thomas Hardy's serialised novels. Beyond her illustration, Paterson exhibited her watercolour paintings as a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society.
