John Piper

Born: 1903, UK, England, Surrey, Epsom   Died: 1992, Henley-on-Thames

Painter, printmaker and designer. Son of a lawyer. First trained as a solicitor before studying at Richmond School of Art, 1926-27, and then at the Royal College of Art, 1927-29. He joined the London Group and the Seven and Five Society in the mid-1930s and started to produce abstract prints and paintings. At this time he also worked on the avant-garde journal, 'Axis', and later wrote as Art Critic for 'The Listener'. From the 1940s onwards he began to focus on English landscapes and architecture often employing a neo-romantic style. He chronicled destroyed buildings during the Second World War as part of the 'Recording Britain' campaign and was appointed an Official War Artist in 1944. Piper later expanded his interests creating stained-glass windows, stage sets, and a tapestry for Chichester Cathedral
