Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Born: 1841, France, Limoges   Died: 1919, Cagnes, France

Painter and sculptor. Son of a tailor. He began work in 1854 as a painter of porcelain in a Paris factory. In 1862 he entered the studio of Charles Gleyre (1808-1874) where he met Claude Monet (1840-1926), Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) and Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870). Together they formed the first nucleus of the Impressionist Movement. He received portrait commissions from the late 1870s onwards and was patronised by the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel from 1881. He painted children, landscapes, flowers, mythological subjects and, particularly, female nudes. In later life he suffered from rheumatism but still painted with brushes strapped to his hands and, with the help of assistants, produced a number of sculptures. His son Jean Renoir (1894-1975) was a film director
