Ceri Geraldus Richards

Born: 1903, UK, Wales, Swansea, Dunvant   Died: 1971, London

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Son of a foundryman and a school teacher. He undertook an apprenticeship in electrical engineering, 1919-21, before studying at Swansea School of Art, 1921-24, and the Royal College of Art, 1924-27. During the 1930s he was associated with the Objective Abstractionists Group but he also worked as an illustrator for an advertising agency. He taught at Chelsea School of Art, 1939-41, Cardiff School of Art, 1941-45, the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal College of Art. He won the Gold Medal at the 1961 National Eisteddfod and represented Britain in the 1962 Venice Biennale. His semi-abstract and figurative paintings and lithographs were usually inspired by poetry, nature and above all, as a talented pianist, by classical music. His wife, Frances Clayton, was also a painter
