Micheal Tyzack

Born: 1933, UK, England, Sheffield   Died: 2007, John's Island, South Carolina

Painter, printmaker and jazz musician. Son of a cutler and civil servant. Studied at Sheffield College of Art, 1950-52, and the Slade School of Fine Art, 1952-56. At the latter he was taught by William Coldstream and Lucian Freud but he moved away from realist to abstract work under the influence of Patrick Heron and Victor Pasmore. In the late 1950s he worked principally as a professional jazz trumpeter but continued to paint. In 1965 he won first prize at the John Moore's Exhibition with his painting 'Alesso B'. He taught briefly at Hornsey and Cardiff and for a while became a member of the 56 Group Wales. In 1971 he moved to America, initially to Iowa, and then taught as Professor of Fine Arts at the College of Charleston, 1976-2005. His geometric abstracts are well represented in public collections in Britain and America
