David Hockney

Born: 1937, UK, England, Bradford

Painter, printmaker, designer and photographer. Studied at Bradford School of Art, 1953-57, after which he undertook hospital work in lieu of National Service, 1957-59. He then attended the Royal College of Art, 1959-62, where he studied alongside Allen Jones (b.1937) and Ron Kitaj (b.1932). Even as a student his work was sought after and he quickly became a leading figure of the British Pop Art movement. In 1963 he moved to Los Angeles where his subject matter included male nudes, suburban swimming pools and portraits. From 1975 he worked on stage designs for operatic productions and during the 1980s and 90s he painted colourful Californian landscapes and produced a series of photo montages. His recent work includes large scale portraits in watercolour
