Sir Terry Frost

Born: 1915, UK, England, Warwickshire, Leamington Spa   Died: 2003, Newlyn, Cornwall

Painter and printmaker. Raised by his grandparents. After leaving school he undertook various jobs including a painter of fighter aircraft for Armstrong Whitworth. During the Second World War he served in North Africa and the Middle East. Captured in Crete in 1941, he was held in Stalag 383 where he was encouraged to draw by fellow prisoner of war Adrian Heath (1920-1992). He later studied at Camberwell School of Art, 1947-50, before working in St Ives as an assistant to Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975), 1951. At St Ives he became an important figure of the British abstract movement. He taught at the Bath Academy of Art before undertaking a fellowship at Leed University, 1954-56. He later taught at Reading University, 1965-81, where he was appointed Professor of Painting in 1977. He produced screenprints and large abstract paintings, usually incorporating circles or semi-circles, often inspired by reflected patterns in water
