Julian Otto Trevelyan

Born: 1910, UK, England, Dorking, Leith Hill   Died: 1988, Hammersmith

Painter and printmaker. Son of the classical scholar Robert Calverley Trevelyan (1872-1951) and husband of, firstly, the potter Ursula Darwin and, secondly, the painter Mary Fedden (b.1915). Studied English Literature at Cambridge, 1928-30, but, inspired by Surrealism, moved to Paris, 1931-34, where he enrolled at William Hayter's 'Atelier 17' studio. In 1937 he partook in the Mass Observation project and also became a member of the Artists International Association. During the Second World War he served as a Camouflage Officer in Palestine and Africa. After the war he became a member of the London Group, 1948, and taught at Chelsea School of Art, 1949-60, and at the Royal College of Art, 1955-63. His autobiography 'Indigo Days' was published in 1957. He produced both surreal and realist work often inspired by scenes of life on and around the Thames at Hammersmith where he had lived since 1935
