Anthony Gross

Painter, printmaker, animator and illustrator. Son of a suffragette and a Hungarian map publisher. Husband of the fashion-artist Daisy Florenty (1899-1988). Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1923, at the Académie Julian in Paris, 1923-24 and 1926-27, and at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, 1924. During the early 1930s he lived mainly in Paris where he shared a studio with his friend the printmaker William Hayter (1901-1988). He worked as an Official War Artist throughout the Second World War travelling to the Middle East, India and Burma and painting over 500 pictures. He taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1954-71. He was appointed President of the Print Makers' Council in 1965 and was made a member of the Royal Academy in 1980. He produced watercolours, etchings, illustrations and animated cartoons
