Eric Ravilious

Born: 1903, UK, England, London   Died: 1942, near Iceland

Painter, printmaker, designer and illustrator. Studied at Eastbourne School of Art, 1920-22, and under Paul Nash (1889-1946) and William Rothenstein (1872-1945) at the Royal College of Art, 1922-25. Taught at the latter, 1930-37. He married the painterTirzah Garwood (1908-1951) and was a fellow student and friend of Edward Bawden (1903-1989). As an illustrator he produced wood engravings and watercolours including work for Robert Gibbings's (1889-1958) Golden Cockerel Press. He also produced designs for Wedgwood, 1930s, and for a wall decoration for the British Pavilion at the 1937 Paris World Fair. He lived near Great Bardfield in Essex until 1938 when he moved to Rye Harbour in Kent. He was appointed an Official War Artist during the Second World War dying in an air-sea rescue
